London to Cambridge 2007

Every year, jolly charitable cyclists bunch together to raise some money by cycling 50 miles from London to Cambridge. Since I was about 5, my Dad has been saying we should give it a shot. Finally (now 17) we’ve got round to it.

Morning

The day started at 6am. We speedily chucked down a bacon sandwich, guzzled down as much water as possible, and zoomed off to Fowlmere. It then took us a good hour to get the bike rack on, paint on the Lycra, and secure the bikes. Securing the bikes is no simple task anymore, as last time we used the bike rack, they fell off on the motorway.

Finally leaving Fowlmere, we set course for the River Lee Country Park (all the way down the A10, couldn’t be any easier to find). As we neared our destination, the amount of cars with bikes attached dramatically increased (surprising hey). Anyway, when we got there we got the bikes off, went for a last minute slash (which is no simple task in a triathlon suit believe me), and got ourselves lined up at the start.

The Route

Supposedly this was an easy-going route, although judging by there being a hill around every corner, and the majority of people having to give up and walk up them, and the age limit of 14, I wouldn’t class it as an easy-going route unless you’d done some training. Anyway, here’s the overview:

A brilliant day out for all involved, the London to Cambridge bike ride winds through beautiful countryside from Waltham Abbey, just north of London, to the finish at Midsummer Common in the heart of Cambridge.

Because I stayed with Dad (its a charity event) it took us 3 hours 30 mins which I don’t think is such a bad time considering Dad hadn’t done any training.

Do you reckon you could have done it much quicker without your dad, or were you going at a pretty reasonable pace ?

Well my Dad hadn’t done any training, so I was having to stop and wait at the top of every hill (which was pretty much what the entire route consisted of), although we were always passing other people, so we couldn’t have been doing too bad. The average time was about 5 hours apparently.

I cover 26 miles in about 1 hour 15, which includes the warm up and cool down, so I would have been able to do it in a lot quicker time if it was a race. Next stop for me is a century race :p

Oh yeah, it was actually like sex on a stick. My balls were quite sore afterwards, need to get me some tight woolie-esque protective shorts, to keep my two veg in order. It will also show off my package which is always a good thing.
I should really write an article about it, fuck it im doing one.
