Merida 880 Road Bike

Saturday, May 19th, 2007 at 5:34 pm

After visiting our local bike shop, the Cambridge Cycle Company, I have finnaly got my hands on a new bike. Its being all set-up for me to use, and I’m going to pick it up next Saturday. Do read on…

Why This One?

Originally I was aiming for the Claud Butler - San Remo T 2007 bike, but after visiting the shop, seeing it in the flesh, and seeing this gorgeous Merida sitting next to it, I was converted. As a pure thing of beauty, this bike offers some exceptional features also. I have picked out a few key things that make this bike awesome:

  • Frame: 6061 Aluminium Road Alloy
  • Gears: Shimano ST 2200 STi Shifters and Sora front and rear derailleurs. (16 speed 53/39, 12-24).
  • Wheels: Joytech front hub and Shimano rear hub with Alex DA16 rims
  • Tyres: Maxxis Detonator 23c tyres.
  • Brakes: Lee Chi callipers.

The picture above just does not do it justice. I took it for a quick ride around Shelford, and I must say its like lightning quick, and a superb build quality. I didn’t really want to bring it back to the shop, but unfortunately I hadn’t yet paid for it. As I said, it won’t be ready until next Saturday when we go to pick it up. I can’t wait.

Gimme Figures

This is where the painful part comes: The bike cost £400, I got some toe clips, and special clip on mudguards for when its pissing it down. All in all, it comes just short of £450. I will be paying about £250 of it, and hopefully the rest will be subsidised by parents as a birthday present.

bnsports obviously can’t tell the difference between a motorbike and a pushbike.

Yea I didn’t have a long enough test ride to comment on the testicle situation. However, I did notice that the seat had a perineum cavity bit, so hopefully I’ll still be able to keep them in working order.

Yea well, bnsports along with many others can’t understand my weird cycling fetish.

That removes the health benefits then doesnt it. If you wanna get fit then getting a motorbike isnt the way to go lol.

i know that, however from where i live it is pointless having a bike to get to college, 17.5 mile journey each way, across A10 -> busy road.

17.5 miles isn’t too far. My route is 10 miles each way, but I could do with a longer one. Perhaps we could house swap?

Also, that crazy (30 odd hours) downtime was due to a file system error apparently. They had to put a new hard drive in it, and transfer all the accounts. For some reason that took an exceptionally large amount of time. So much for the “It will be ready in 30 mins - 2 hours”.

Can’t wait to move to MediaTemple. I’m seriously considering it now. phpBB3 RC1 was released yesterday, so I can finally get to work on the new Woolie’s World. As usual, its going to be completely different (at least that the plan).

You must be some super person if you can ride a bike with no pedals. Do you just clamp your feet to the sides of those thing to connect to them?

Na, generally you would transfer your pedals from one bike to the other, as you have the gear for those specific shoes (perhaps using clip-less pedals). You’ll rarely see pictures of road bikes with pedals. Its not cost effective for the manufacturer, or purchaser.

Looks good I guess (as far as bikes go…) but blue? :(

I just used the pedals that came with my bike lol

Al, you have no MICRO - WASD my foot. There’s more to a keyboard than that, like the arrow keys…
