Ibanez GRG170DX

It was about time that I upgraded my guitar. I currently am using an Affinity Series Squier Strat, but it’s about had it now. Firstly, when I got it, I managed to break the tremolo bar (don’t ask), also I dropped the tape dispenser on it, so it has a large dent on the top of the body. Even though I tried to cover it up with paint, it’s still noticeable when close up. Thirdly, the teeth inside the bottom E machine head are just about shredded so I don’t dare change the tuning of that string. All in all, I think it’s about time for me to get this new one.

Ibanez GRG170DX Electric Guitar, possibly the one I\'ll buy.

Haven’t actually bought it yet, but after an awful lot of looking around and research, the reviews for this one seem to make it the best choice. Although it isn’t best for classic rock, I can always switch back the the Strat to play those numbers. I should think that I will get some separate distortion/overdrive pedals to go along with it. I’m currently using a Zoom 505 multi-effects module, which is very good, and gives a nice sound, but some of the distortion sounds are a little electronic sounding.

Anyway, here’s some info on this new one:

Take classic Ibanez playability, combine it with 3 Powersound pickups, and throw in a seriously stable tremolo system and you’ve got an axe made to rock. The GRG-shape maple neck meets up with a basswood body housing a humbucker at the neck and bridge, and a single-coil in the middle position, plus a FAT 10 bridge. The 24-fret rosewood fingerboard features edgy shark-tooth inlays. Chrome hardware.

Most people are commenting on the good sound that the neck humbucker gives, so that’s something to look forward to. Although I am slightly worried about someone mentioning that when one of the strings is bent, the others will also change pitch. Only one person has commented on this however, so I shouldn’t think it’s too much of a problem.

On another guitary note, I was going round eBay yesterday, and impulse bought myself a very large book type thing teaching you how to shred (finger tapping, sweep picking etc) and that should be coming sometime next week. Although I’ve got a lot of exams so I probably won’t be practicing that much for a while.

Anyway, there’s my little brag out of the way, if you’ve read this far and are still awake, I congratulate you.

The Matt sends his approval. I would also like to encourage shredding from all, as it is most sexual.

p.s. Ben should learn to tap on his bass, (it is fucking possible) as he needs some new tricks.

I dunno if i should trade in my old vintage sg for one of these, what do you reckon?

It depends what model you have. If it’s on of the < 1961 models, I’d certainly keep it, however if you have the junior SG I’d trade it in for this one (personally). It really depends what type of music you play. This guitar is great for all round rock, but if you’re looking to perform demanding jazz or classic rock ‘n roll, you might want to either look for something else, or buy some thicker grade strings for this one.

I love it, I’ve had it for about half a year now and its serving me very well.
